The US Trust was formed in 1988. Since then, sister trusts have been established in the UK, the Netherlands and Germany. The Trust is funded by small groups of dedicated individuals and receives invaluable financial support from institutions. It enjoys the full backing of the Tanzanian and Kenyan governments. Collectively it represents a new spirit of dynamic ‘hands on’ conservation, making optimal use of limited resources and concentrating on management and infrastructure in the field. Though Africa is now the beneficiary of many excellent programs, the Mkomazi Project is unique. The rebuilding of Mkomazi, the endangered species projects for the African Hunting Dog and the Black Rhino, the Outreach Program, and the activities in Kora have not been undertaken just to maintain the status quo in conservation; they aim to re-establish complete ecosystems and reverse the damage which has been done. In addition, we are now mastering revival and renewal techniques with a view to self-sustaining ecosystems. |
